How to convert CGPA into percentage
Most Indian boards and universities grade on a 10-point CGPA scale. To convert CGPA into percentage, multiply your CGPA by 9.5. This is the rule CBSE introduced with its grading system, and it is the most widely recognised conversion among Indian universities, recruiters and admission offices.
Formula
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
- Find your final CGPA on your marksheet or consolidated transcript.
- Multiply it by 9.5.
- Round to two decimal places — that is your equivalent percentage.
Example
A CGPA of 8.2 → 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%
A CGPA of 7.5 → 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%
What is CGPA?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of the grade points you have earned across all completed semesters or subjects, usually on a 10-point scale. Instead of showing exact marks, each subject is given a letter grade and a grade point, and your CGPA averages those points.
- At university, each semester's SGPA is weighted by its credits to give your CGPA. Most universities following UGC's Choice Based Credit System use O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4 and F = 0. The SGPA to CGPA calculator works this out for you.
- In CBSE Class 10 (2010–2017), CGPA was the average of the grade points in your five main subjects, excluding additional subjects.
A CGPA score of 8 or above is generally considered very good, 7–8 good, and 6–7 average — but what counts as good depends on your university's grading and the program you are applying to.
Why multiply by 9.5?
CBSE arrived at 9.5 by averaging the percentage scores of the top students in each subject over several years and comparing it with the grade point they received. The average top score worked out to roughly 95%, so each grade point was treated as being worth 9.5 percentage points. That is why the maximum CGPA of 10 maps to 95% rather than 100%.
CGPA to percentage formula for different scales
Not every institution uses the 10-point CBSE rule. Use the formula that matches the scale on your transcript:
| Grading scale | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 10-point (CBSE) | CGPA × 9.5 | 8.0 → 76% |
| 10-point (linear) | CGPA × 10 | 8.0 → 80% |
| 7-point | (CGPA ÷ 7) × 100 | 5.6 → 80% |
| 5-point | (CGPA ÷ 5) × 100 | 4.0 → 80% |
| 4-point | (CGPA ÷ 4) × 100 | 3.2 → 80% |
Check your university's rule first
Several universities publish their own conversion. AKTU and older VTU schemes, for example, use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, while VTU's 2021+ schemes use CGPA × 10. If your transcript or university regulations state a formula, that formula always takes priority over the CBSE rule.

How to convert 10th CGPA into percentage
CBSE awarded Class 10 results as grades and a CGPA under its Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme from 2010 to 2017. The Board's own marksheet stated that an indicative percentage can be found by multiplying the grade point by 9.5 — for a single subject or for your overall CGPA.
| Grade | Marks range | Grade point | Indicative % (× 9.5) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 91–100 | 10 | 95% |
| A2 | 81–90 | 9 | 85.5% |
| B1 | 71–80 | 8 | 76% |
| B2 | 61–70 | 7 | 66.5% |
| C1 | 51–60 | 6 | 57% |
| C2 | 41–50 | 5 | 47.5% |
| D | 33–40 | 4 | 38% |
Example
A Class 10 CGPA of 9.2 → 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%
How to calculate graduation percentage from CGPA
For your degree (B.Tech, B.Com, B.Sc and so on), use the final CGPA on your consolidated transcript or last semester grade card — not an individual SGPA. Then apply your university's official conversion formula. Only if your university publishes no formula should you fall back on CGPA × 9.5, and say so on any form that asks how the percentage was calculated.
How to convert percentage to CGPA
To go the other way, divide your percentage by 9.5. A score of 85% is 85 ÷ 9.5 = 8.95 CGPA. You can switch the calculator above to Percentage → CGPA, or use the dedicated percentage to CGPA calculator.
Formula
CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
CGPA to percentage for study abroad applications
Universities abroad rarely use CGPA. Application portals usually ask for either a percentage or a GPA, and many ask you to report the figure exactly as it appears on your transcript. Typical minimums:
| Country | Typical minimum (Master's) | Approx. CGPA (× 9.5) |
|---|---|---|
| USA | 60–70% (3.0 GPA for top programs) | 6.3–7.4 |
| UK | 55–60% (2:1 equivalent for Russell Group) | 5.8–6.3 |
| Canada | 65–75% | 6.8–7.9 |
| Australia | 60–65% | 6.3–6.8 |
| Germany | 60–70% (converted via the Bavarian formula) | 6.3–7.4 |
| Ireland | 60% (2.1 equivalent) | 6.3 |
If a US university wants a 4.0-scale GPA, use the CGPA to GPA calculator and check whether the program requires a WES or ECE credential evaluation.
Difference between CGPA and percentage
| Factor | CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Average of grade points across all semesters | Marks obtained out of total marks × 100 |
| Scale | Usually 0–10 (sometimes 4, 5 or 7) | 0–100 |
| Precision | Grouped into grade bands | Exact marks |
| Used by | CBSE, most Indian universities | State boards, recruiters, many forms |
| Conversion | CGPA × 9.5 (or university rule) | Percentage ÷ 9.5 |
Common mistakes when converting CGPA
- Using × 10 when your university uses × 9.5 (or vice versa). The difference at 8 CGPA is 4 percentage points.
- Converting SGPA instead of CGPA. SGPA is for one semester; use the SGPA to CGPA calculator first.
- Mixing scales. A 3.5 on a 4-point scale is not the same as a 3.5 on a 10-point scale.
- Rounding too early. Round only the final percentage, not intermediate steps.
