How to convert SGPA to percentage
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) summarises your performance in a single semester on a 10-point scale. Many Indian technical universities convert it to a percentage by subtracting 0.75 and multiplying by 10. It is the default in the calculator above.
Formula
Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10
- Take the SGPA printed on your semester grade card.
- Subtract 0.75 from it.
- Multiply the result by 10 and round to two decimals.
Example
SGPA 8.4 → (8.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 76.5%
SGPA 7.2 → (7.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 64.5%
You will also see this written as (SGPA × 10) − 7.5. It is the same formula with the brackets expanded, so both versions always give the same answer. Under this rule a perfect 10 SGPA works out to 92.5%, not 100%.
SGPA to percentage formula by university
There is no single national rule. Each university notifies its own conversion in its regulations or ordinance, and some have changed theirs between batches. The formulas below are the ones the calculator supports:
| Formula | Where it is used | 8.0 SGPA becomes |
|---|---|---|
| (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 | AKTU (Uttar Pradesh); VTU 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes | 72.5% |
| SGPA × 10 | VTU 2021 and 2022 schemes; universities with a linear scale | 80% |
| SGPA × 9.5 | Institutions that follow the CBSE-style multiplier | 76% |
Check your scheme and regulations
The same university can use different formulas for different admission batches — VTU is the best-known example, where the older and newer schemes differ by 7.5 percentage points. Before quoting a percentage on a job or admission form, look for the conversion rule printed on the back of your grade card or in your university's regulations, or ask your college examination section. That rule always overrides any generic formula.
What is SGPA and how is it calculated?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your average grade point for a single semester, on a 10-point scale. Your university prints it on every semester grade card, and your CGPA is built from these SGPAs.
Your SGPA is a credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in each course that semester. Courses with more credits pull the average harder. Most universities following UGC's Choice Based Credit System map letter grades to points like this: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4 and F = 0 (your university's exact bands may differ).
Formula
SGPA = Σ (Course credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Course credits
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade point | Credits × GP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics | 4 | A+ | 9 | 36 |
| Engineering Physics | 4 | A | 8 | 32 |
| Programming in C | 3 | O | 10 | 30 |
| Physics Lab | 2 | A+ | 9 | 18 |
| Communication Skills | 2 | B+ | 7 | 14 |
| Total | 15 | 130 |
SGPA = 130 ÷ 15 = 8.67. Converted with the deduction formula, that is (8.67 − 0.75) × 10 = 79.2%.

How to convert percentage to SGPA
Reverse the steps: divide your percentage by 10 and add 0.75. Switch the calculator to Percentage → SGPA to do it automatically for any of the supported formulas.
Formula
SGPA = (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75
For example, to know what SGPA you need for 75%: 75 ÷ 10 + 0.75 = 8.25. For 60% you need an SGPA of 6.75. This is handy for working out the SGPA target behind a placement cut-off quoted in percentage.
SGPA vs CGPA: which one should you convert?
| SGPA | CGPA | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | One semester | All semesters completed so far |
| Changes | Fresh every semester | Updates as each semester is added |
| Used for | Semester-wise eligibility, backlogs, scholarships | Degree class, placements, higher studies |

Recruiters and universities almost always want your aggregate, not a single semester. If a form asks for your overall percentage, first combine your semesters with the SGPA to CGPA calculator, then convert the CGPA. Averaging semester-wise percentages instead can give a slightly different number when semesters carry different credits.
SGPA for study abroad applications
Universities in the US, UK, Canada and Germany do not ask you to convert SGPAs yourself. They want your original transcripts and either evaluate them in-house or ask for a credential evaluation from an agency such as WES. Enter grades on application portals exactly as they appear on your marksheets. If a portal insists on a 4.0 GPA, use the CGPA to GPA calculator on your overall CGPA rather than on a single semester.
How to use this SGPA to percentage calculator
- Pick the formula your university uses from the University / formula menu.
- Enter your SGPA out of 10 — the percentage and division appear as you type.
- Need a target instead? Switch to Percentage → SGPA and enter the percentage you're aiming for to see the SGPA it requires.
Not sure which formula applies? Compare all three in the conversion table above, then confirm with your university before submitting anything official.
Common mistakes when converting SGPA
- Using the wrong scheme's formula. At 8 SGPA, (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 gives 72.5% while × 10 gives 80% — a gap large enough to change your eligibility for some cut-offs.
- Quoting one semester as your degree percentage. Your best semester is not your aggregate.
- Expecting 10 SGPA to equal 100%. Under the deduction rule the ceiling is 92.5%, and under × 9.5 it is 95%.
- Rounding SGPA before converting. Use the SGPA exactly as printed (usually two decimals) and round only the final percentage.
- Converting marks yourself when you have actual marks. If your marksheet shows real marks, the percentage to marks calculator gives a more exact figure than any grade-point formula.
