How to convert percentage to CGPA
On the 10-point scale used by CBSE and most Indian universities, divide your percentage by 9.5 to get the equivalent CGPA. It is simply the CBSE CGPA-to-percentage rule (CGPA × 9.5) run in reverse.
Formula
CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
- Work out your overall percentage (marks obtained ÷ maximum marks × 100) if you don't already have it.
- Divide the percentage by 9.5.
- Round to two decimals. If the answer is above 10, report 10 — the scale cannot go higher.
Examples
82% ÷ 9.5 = 8.63 CGPA
67% ÷ 9.5 = 7.05 CGPA
91% ÷ 9.5 = 9.58 CGPA
When do you need to convert percentage to CGPA?
Most people search for this conversion because a form wants a number in a format they don't have. Common situations:
- State-board or ICSE students filling in an application that only has a “CGPA” field, often designed around CBSE results.
- Students moving from a marks-based to a grade-based system — for example, from a percentage-based diploma or school into a university that reports everything in CGPA.
- Scholarship or internship criteria written in CGPA (say, “minimum 7.5 CGPA”) when your marksheet shows a percentage. Converting tells you quickly whether you clear the bar.
- Comparing yourself with peers from a different board or university that uses grade points.
Converted CGPA is an estimate
A CGPA you calculate yourself is not the same as one awarded by your board or university. If a form has room for a percentage, enter the percentage. Where only CGPA is accepted, enter the converted figure and keep your original marksheet ready — admission offices verify against it.
Converting Class 10 and 12 board marks to CGPA
Board results usually show marks, not a percentage, so start by calculating the percentage. Use the subjects your form or institution asks for — some want all subjects, others only the best five.
Worked example
Marks in five subjects: 438 out of 500
Percentage = 438 ÷ 500 × 100 = 87.6%
CGPA = 87.6 ÷ 9.5 = 9.22
Students who passed Class 10 under CBSE's CCE grading scheme (roughly 2010–2017) received a CGPA instead of marks. CBSE described CGPA × 9.5 as an indicative percentage, which is why dividing by 9.5 is the accepted way back. If you need the raw marks equivalent of a CGPA, use the CGPA to marks calculator; to find marks from a percentage, use the percentage to marks calculator.
Percentage to CGPA on different scales
Pick the scale used by the institution asking for your CGPA, not the one you studied under. The calculator's scale menu applies these formulas:
| Scale | Formula | 80% becomes |
|---|---|---|
| 10-point (CBSE × 9.5) | Percentage ÷ 9.5 | 8.42 / 10 |
| 10-point (× 10, linear) | (Percentage ÷ 100) × 10 | 8 / 10 |
| 7-point scale | (Percentage ÷ 100) × 7 | 5.6 / 7 |
| 5-point scale | (Percentage ÷ 100) × 5 | 4 / 5 |
| 4-point scale | (Percentage ÷ 100) × 4 | 3.2 / 4 |
US-style 4.0 GPAs are a special case — American universities weigh letter grades rather than a straight proportion. For applications abroad, the percentage to GPA calculator gives a closer estimate.

* Above 95%, dividing by 9.5 gives more than 10, so the CGPA is shown as the scale maximum of 10.
What about percentages above 95%?
Because the multiplier is 9.5, the top of the CGPA scale lines up with 95%, not 100%. Anything from 95% to 100% maps to a 10 CGPA — 98% ÷ 9.5 = 10.32, which is not a valid CGPA. Report 10 in such cases. If you need to show that you scored, say, 98% rather than 95%, put the percentage in a remarks field or attach your marksheet.
Should you divide by 9.5 or 10?
| Divide by | Use when | 75% becomes |
|---|---|---|
| 9.5 | The form follows CBSE-style grading or doesn't say | 7.89 |
| 10 | The institution states a linear scale (CGPA × 10 = percentage) | 7.5 |
| Your university's rule | Your university publishes its own conversion | Varies |
Dividing by 9.5 always gives a slightly higher CGPA than dividing by 10. When in doubt, use 9.5 — it is the most widely recognised rule in India — and mention the method if the form allows notes. To go the other way, see the CGPA to percentage calculator.
How to use this percentage to CGPA calculator
- Select the CGPA scale of the institution or form asking for your CGPA (10-point ÷ 9.5 is the default).
- Enter your overall percentage. The CGPA and division update instantly.
- If the result is capped at the scale maximum, the note under the result shows the uncapped figure so you know why.
- Switch to CGPA → Percentage to check the conversion in the other direction.
Common mistakes
- Using marks instead of percentage. 438 ÷ 9.5 is meaningless — convert marks to a percentage first.
- Reporting a CGPA above 10. Cap it at 10 for percentages of 95% and above.
- Mixing subject sets. If the form wants the best five subjects, don't include your sixth/additional subject in the percentage.
- Rounding up to clear a cut-off. 7.47 is not 7.5. Admission offices recompute from your marksheet.
- Converting SGPA-based percentages back with ÷ 9.5. If your percentage came from (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, reverse that formula instead — the SGPA to percentage calculator does it for you.
